First Week at My Internship.

My first official day at my internship was Wednesday. I worked about 7 hours and it was a pretty easy day. I was introduced to everyone within the Girl Scout Cactus Pine Council that was available, then settled into my work routine by making my first call to introduce myself and also to touch base with someone that I will be working with in a couple months on a program called Baby Camp. This is a weekend planned in Prescott for teenage mothers, where they learn parenting skills and also gain some personal insight and strength, through workshops, lectures, hikes and ropes courses. I am told it is a rather intense experience but I am excited to take part in its planning and coordination. After lunch, I responded to journals. This is a pen pal type activity where the girls in our Tuesday night program are able to express themselves to us and tell us what is going on in their lives and are able to ask any questions about the activities and presentation that they participated in the previous night's program and also any general concerns they may have. This was quite eye opening and left me wondering for a while if I could truly handle this type of work. It will be a lot more difficult than I initially expected. However, I intend to take it day by day and put my best foot forward. Later, I began planning for next Saturday's program with our youngest group of girl scouts. So far, I intend to start off with an ice breaker, "Human Bingo" to get the girls better aquainted with each other and then follow that with a cultural craft activity, though I'm not sure how I am going to put that together quite yet. I met them a couple weeks ago and they are really sweet. I am really looking forward to seeing my first program get under way. I hope that it is a success. On Thurday, I went into work for a two hours but only did inventory for Baby Camp and a bit of office work. Program this Saturday was cancelled because of the holiday. I'm very excited to begin my work week on Tuesday.

Wow Leanne, you're internship sounds awesome. I never knew about the programs that the girl scout council offered to young girls. Things like a weekend for teen mothers is so great for young women in that situation. I assume that many girls in this situation don't have much experience in being a full time mother and I'm sure this workshop will give them a step up on people who don't have the same opportunities that you're giving them.
Although I was a girl scout, I'm not sure that I remember writing letters about my concerns or questions in life, unless it has changed in the past 10 years (which I'm sure it has greatly). I can't even imaging the things that these young girls are concerned about in times today, and I can't imagine what kind of things you need to reply to make them comfortable in their concern. I look forward to hearing more of your experienced this semester.

Hi Leanne,
My daughter is a brownie in the Catus Pine Council, troop 810. The baby camp program that you are helping to coordinate sounds really interesting. I am glad that such programs exist. You might want to check out Stephanie's blog, because it sounds like she is also working with teenage Mom's.

Wow that is really cool that you are working with the Girl Scouts. I was a Girl Scout growing up and I loved it! We didn't have a program like the Baby Camp one you are working on so I think that is really cool that they now do. It sounds like you are going to have a lot of opportunity to make a difference and work hard. I wish you lots of luck in your work and I know you'll be able to do it, you're making such a difference for these girls!

Hi Leanne,
Wow! It sounds like you are having a fun helping young teenage girls! That is so great that you are able to help underprivileged teenage mothers who need help adjusting to what is to come with motherhood. I have learned from my classes that I have taken both at high school and at ASU that most teenage mothers are so unprepared. For there to be programs out there that exist to aid these young adults, is great and for you to be there to offer your services is cool! You go girl! At one point in my life I volunteered at a woman's shelter where I helped clean. I cleaned the cribs, toys and floors of a nursery there, so I know as a woman this can be very fulfilling and useful to other women out there.

Hi Leanne! You seem to be in a position much like myself i.e. your concentration areas don't closely relate to what you want to do after you graduate. That being said I find your concentration areas very beneficial to what you are trying to accomplish in life. I feel that music can often transcend cultural differences and bring people of all ages and races together. Having the ability to not only recognize that but also to understand the culture and reasons why that culture is different is extremely important. Your internship sounds beneficial and rewarding since you have a chance to be a positive role model. More importantly though you are opening their young minds to new cultures and ideas.

Leanne,
I think that your internship is a great way to give back to the community. I think that your two interest is great because they both work with culture where you can learn the different structure of where music came from. Is is good that these girls look up to you because you can be a good role model to them .

Adding on to my response I think that by you interacting with these young girls you are someone that they can trust and talk to. I never knew that girl scouts are so involved with the community and everything. I bet it is very interesting hearing all the concerns that the girls have and helping them and giving them advice. Keep up on what your doing.
